Microsoft Edge Not Working? How to Fix It

Microsoft Edge won't open, keeps crashing, or shows a blank screen? Close it in Task Manager, update, then repair Edge from Settings. The full fix list.

A frustrated older man at a desk

When Microsoft Edge will not open, crashes on launch, or loads a blank screen, the fix ladder is short: force-close it in Task Manager and reopen, update it, clear the cache, and — if it still misbehaves — repair Edge from Windows Settings without losing your data.

Start with the quick fixes

First, fully close Edge: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, right-click Microsoft Edge in Task Manager, and choose End task, then reopen it. Next, update it under Settings, About Microsoft Edge, which checks and installs on its own. If pages are stale or broken, clear the cache with Ctrl+Shift+Delete. A plain restart of the PC clears a surprising share of launch problems too.

Repair Edge without losing anything

If the quick fixes do not hold, repair the app: open Settings, Apps, Installed apps, find Microsoft Edge, select the three dots, Modify, then Repair. Repair reinstalls Edge while keeping your favorites, passwords, and history. If the Modify option is greyed out, Edge is managed by your organization and only an admin can repair it. A repair fixes most “won’t launch” cases that a restart cannot.

When it crashes or shows a blank screen

A crash right after launch is usually a bad extension or a graphics bug. To test extensions, press Win+R and run msedge.exe --disable-extensions; if Edge is stable, remove the culprit at edge://extensions. For a black or white blank screen, turn off “Use graphics acceleration when available” under Settings, System and performance, and restart Edge. If the browser is fine but a page will not load, that is a different issue, and if Chrome is your main browser, Chrome that keeps crashing and an app that won’t open on Windows cover the neighboring cases. Weighing the two browsers? See Chrome vs Edge on Windows 11.

Work top-down — End task, update, clear cache, then Repair — and most Edge problems clear within a couple of minutes. Keep Repair in mind before you ever reinstall, since it fixes the same faults without touching your data.

Common questions

Edge won’t open at all — what now?

Open Task Manager and End task on every Microsoft Edge process, then reopen it. If it still will not launch, run Repair under Settings, Apps, Installed apps, Microsoft Edge, Modify; as a last resort, reinstall Edge over the top from Microsoft’s download page.

Why does Edge open and then immediately close?

Usually a broken extension or a graphics bug. Start it with msedge.exe --disable-extensions to test, and if that is stable, remove the bad add-on. If not, turn off graphics acceleration in Settings, System and performance.

How do I fix a slow Edge?

Clear the cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete), disable extensions you do not use, and turn on Startup boost and Sleeping tabs under Settings, System and performance. Too many open tabs and a bloated cache are the usual causes.

Will repairing Edge delete my favorites and passwords?

No. Repair keeps your favorites, passwords, and history. Only a full reset or uninstall clears your data, which is why Windows offers Repair first.
