How to Fix a Second Monitor Not Detected on Windows 11

A step-by-step fix for a second monitor that Windows 11 won't detect, covering cables, Win+P mode, manual detection, drivers, and refresh rate.

Most of the time a second monitor is not actually broken, Windows just is not talking to it. Work through five things in order: the cable and input source, the Win+P projection mode, a manual detect in Settings, the graphics driver, and the refresh rate. One of those five accounts for nearly every case.

Check the Cable and Input Source First

Before touching any settings, rule out hardware. Unplug the video cable from both ends and reseat it, and if you have a spare HDMI or DisplayPort cable, swap it in since a marginal cable is a common cause of a monitor that is powered on but never appears. If your monitor has more than one input, check its own on-screen menu and confirm it is set to the port you actually connected (HDMI 1 vs. HDMI 2, or HDMI vs. DisplayPort) — this is the single most common reason a monitor shows “no signal” instead of a Windows desktop. If you are going through a dock, hub, or adapter, plug the monitor directly into the PC’s video output instead to see if the dock is the problem, and confirm the monitor’s power cable is seated and the monitor is actually turned on, not just in standby.

Confirm Windows Isn’t Stuck Projecting to One Screen

Windows can be perfectly aware of a second monitor and still not show anything on it if it is set to project to only one screen. Press Windows key + P to open the projection menu, which gives you four choices: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. For normal dual-monitor use you want Extend; if it is set to “PC screen only,” your second monitor is being deliberately ignored rather than undetected. This same menu is reachable from Quick Settings (Windows key + A) if Win+P does not respond.

Force Windows to Detect the Second Display

If the cable and projection mode both check out, tell Windows to re-scan for displays. Go to Settings > System > Display, and if the second monitor isn’t listed under Multiple displays, select Detect. It’s also worth trying the graphics driver reset shortcut: Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B, which briefly blanks the screen and beeps while it restarts the display driver — a quick fix for a monitor that dropped off after waking from sleep or an update. If neither works, restart the PC before going further, since a full restart clears out a surprising number of stuck display sessions.

Update or Roll Back the Graphics Driver

A driver that is outdated, corrupted, or was just changed by a Windows update is the next most common cause, especially if the monitor worked before a recent update. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and choose Properties > Driver tab. From there:

  • Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software if the monitor never worked or the driver looks old.
  • Roll Back Driver if detection broke right after a driver or Windows update (this option is grayed out if no earlier driver is stored).

If neither button fixes it, uninstall the driver outright: right-click the adapter, choose Uninstall device, check the box to remove the driver software if offered, restart, then let Windows reinstall a fresh driver automatically or run Update driver again. If the graphics adapter is missing entirely from Device Manager or the fix requires a clean reinstall, doing it from safe mode avoids conflicts with whatever is currently loaded. For manufacturer-specific driver packages, NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel each publish their own driver utilities that go beyond what Windows Update installs.

Fix a Wrong or Missing Refresh Rate

Occasionally Windows sees the monitor but picks a refresh rate the cable or monitor cannot actually sustain, which shows up as flickering, a brief connection then a drop to “no signal,” or a black screen right after Windows detects the display. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the second monitor if you have more than one listed, and check Choose a refresh rate. Set it to the monitor’s native refresh rate (60 Hz unless you know it supports higher) rather than leaving it on an auto-selected value, especially over a long or budget HDMI cable.
