Outlook Stuck in Outbox? How to Send It

An email stuck in the Outlook Outbox usually means offline mode, a big attachment, or an open message. Here is how to clear it in classic and new Outlook.

A message that sits in the Outlook Outbox and never leaves is usually blocked by one of a few things: the app is set to work offline, the attachment is too big, or the message is still open in its own window. Which fix you use depends on whether you have classic Outlook or the new Outlook for Windows.

Know which Outlook you have

Classic Outlook — the 2016 through 2021 and Microsoft 365 desktop app — has a real Outbox folder and a Send / Receive tab, and this is where “stuck in the Outbox” literally happens. New Outlook for Windows, now the default mail app, works more like Outlook on the web: there is no traditional Outbox, and a failed message lands in Drafts or shows a sync error instead.

Fix it in classic Outlook

First, turn off offline mode: on the Send / Receive tab, click Work Offline so it is no longer highlighted, then press F9 to Send/Receive All Folders. If one message is stuck, double-click to open it and close it again, or drag it from the Outbox to Drafts, remove any attachment over about 20 MB, and resend. If nothing sends at all, re-enter your password when prompted, and start Outlook with outlook.exe /safe to rule out a misbehaving add-in. Repairing the account or the offline data file clears the rest.

Fix it in new Outlook or on the web

There is no Outbox to empty here, so check the connection status, open the message from Drafts, confirm the recipient address, and send again. Remove an oversized attachment and share a link instead. If messages still will not go, remove the account under Settings, Accounts, and add it back. Once mail is flowing, it is worth knowing how to recall or unsend a message and schedule mail to send later; keeping folders tidy with a new Outlook folder makes stuck items easier to spot.

Nine times out of ten it is offline mode or one oversized message holding up the queue. Clear that message, and the rest of the Outbox usually flushes on the next send.
