Why Is Chrome So Slow, and How to Speed It Up

Chrome slows down from too many tabs, memory-hungry extensions, or a stale cache. Use Chrome's built-in Task Manager to find the cause, then fix it.

Chrome usually slows down for one of five reasons: too many open tabs, an extension eating memory in the background, a bloated cache, a hardware acceleration conflict with your graphics driver, or a version that has fallen behind on updates. Chrome has a built-in Task Manager, separate from the Windows one, that shows you which of these is actually happening in under a minute. Work through the checks below in order and you fix the real cause instead of guessing.

Open Chrome’s Task Manager first

Press Shift+Esc while Chrome is focused to open its Task Manager. This is not the same tool as Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc); Chrome’s version lists every open tab, extension, and background process as its own row, along with memory, CPU, and network use, so you can see exactly what is heavy before you change anything. Click a column header to sort, and select a row and choose “End process” to kill just that tab or extension without closing the whole browser. If one line is using far more memory or CPU than everything else combined, you have found your culprit.

Close tabs and let Memory Saver do the rest

Every open tab keeps its own process and memory allocation, so a window with dozens of tabs is the single most common cause of a sluggish Chrome. The habit of parking tabs for “later” instead of bookmarking them is usually the real driver, and it adds up fast across a browsing session that runs for days without a restart.

Rather than manually closing tabs, turn on Chrome’s Memory Saver: open the three-dot menu, go to Settings, select Performance, and turn Memory Saver on. It automatically deactivates tabs you have not touched in a while and reloads them the instant you click back, freeing memory without losing your tabs. You can pick how aggressively it deactivates tabs, and add sites you never want put to sleep, like a music player or a chat app, to an “Always keep these sites active” list. Memory Saver will not deactivate a tab that is playing audio, sharing your screen, or has an unsaved form, so it is safe to leave on by default. If your PC feels generally overloaded and not just Chrome, it is worth checking whether your PC needs more RAM.

Clean up extensions

Extensions run continuously in the background even on tabs that have nothing to do with them, and a handful of heavy ones is often worse than dozens of open tabs. Ad blockers, password managers, and shopping-coupon add-ons are common offenders because they inspect every page you load. Open chrome://extensions or go to the three-dot menu, Extensions, then Manage Extensions, and turn off anything you do not use regularly. Turning an extension off keeps it installed but stops it from running; use Remove to uninstall it completely, which also resets any settings it changed. Test Chrome’s speed after disabling a few at a time so you can tell which one was actually the problem, rather than switching everything off and back on at random. Chrome’s Task Manager also lists each extension as its own row, so you can spot a memory hog directly instead of disabling extensions blind.

Clear the cache

A cache that has grown huge, or one holding onto broken data from a site that has since changed, can slow page loads and cause pages to render incorrectly. Open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Clear browsing data (or press Ctrl+Shift+Delete). On the Basic tab, pick a time range and check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files; leave Browsing history unchecked if you want to keep it. Clearing cookies signs you out of most sites, so expect to log back in afterward. This is also a reasonable first step if ads and pop-ups or odd page behavior started after visiting a specific site.

Check hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration hands video decoding and page rendering to your GPU instead of the CPU, and it normally makes Chrome faster. But an outdated or buggy graphics driver can turn that same setting into the cause of stutter, choppy scrolling, or crashes on graphics-heavy pages. To check it, open Settings, select System on the left, and look at “Use graphics acceleration when available.” If Chrome has been unstable on video calls or graphics-heavy sites, turn the toggle off, relaunch Chrome, and see if the problem goes away; if it does, update your graphics driver and turn the setting back on, since acceleration is worth keeping once the driver is current.

Update Chrome

An old build misses months of performance and stability fixes. Open the three-dot menu, select Help, then About Google Chrome; this page checks for updates automatically and shows a Relaunch button once one is ready. Click Relaunch to finish the update, since a downloaded update does not take effect until Chrome restarts. It is worth doing this check even if Chrome has not asked you to, because updates can install silently in the background without prompting a relaunch.

Run through the Task Manager check first so you are not guessing, then apply whichever fix from the table above matches what you actually saw. Most slow-Chrome complaints trace back to too many tabs or one runaway extension, and both take under a minute to confirm and fix.
