How to Rotate a PDF and Actually Save It

The rotate buttons in Chrome, Edge, and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader only turn the page on screen — close the file and the rotation is gone. To rotate a PDF for good, run it through a free tool like iLovePDF or Smallpdf, PDF24 Creator on Windows, or Preview on a Mac, then save the result.

Why your viewer’s rotate button doesn’t save#

Most viewers treat rotation as a display setting, not an edit. The rotate arrows in Chrome and Edge, and the View > Rotate View command in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, spin the page so you can read a sideways scan — but download or reopen the file and it snaps right back. Reader’s free version has no way to save a permanent rotation; that feature lives in paid Acrobat Pro. The fix: open the PDF in a tool that rewrites the file itself, rotate there, and save.

iLovePDF and Smallpdf each have a dedicated Rotate PDF page. Drag your file in, then spin every page at once or hover over a single page to rotate just that one — useful when a sideways scan sits in a stack of upright pages.
