Android Phone Not Showing Up on PC? Fix It
Plugged your Android into a computer and nothing shows up? Usually the USB mode is set to charging. Switch it to file transfer, plus the other fixes.
When your Android phone charges but does not appear on the PC, the connection is almost always set to charging only. Unlock the phone, tap the USB notification, and switch it to File transfer. If that does not do it, the cause is usually the cable, the default USB mode, or a driver on the computer.
Switch the USB mode to File transfer
Modern Android defaults a new USB connection to charging, so the phone stays invisible until you change it. With the phone unlocked and plugged in, pull down the notification shade and tap the USB notification — it reads something like “Charging this device via USB” — then choose File transfer / Android Auto. On stock Android this lives under Settings, Connected devices, USB; on Samsung phones it is in the same notification or under Connections.

Rule out the cable and port
Many bundled and cheap USB-C cables carry power but no data, so the phone charges and never shows files. Swap to a cable you know transfers data, and plug into a rear port on a desktop rather than a front hub. To make the choice stick, set Settings, Developer options, Default USB configuration to File transfer.
Fix the computer side
On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Portable Devices, right-click the phone or “MTP USB Device,” and choose Update driver — or uninstall it and rescan for hardware changes. On a Mac, macOS cannot read Android storage on its own, and Google’s old Android File Transfer app has been discontinued, so use a current tool such as the free, open-source OpenMTP instead. Once the phone appears, transferring files between Android and PC covers the fastest ways to move photos and folders, and it is a good moment to confirm your Android backup is current.
In most cases the fix is the first step — the phone was only ever charging. If switching modes and swapping the cable still shows nothing, test the same phone on another computer to tell a phone problem apart from a PC one.
