Fix a Pixel 10 Touchscreen That Goes Unresponsive
Some Pixel 10 phones had the touchscreen freeze under certain conditions. Here's what caused it and the official August 2026 update that fixes it.
On some Pixel 10 phones, the touchscreen can stop responding under certain conditions, and the only immediate cure is a restart. Google fixed the underlying bug in the August 2026 Pixel update, which raises the security patch level to 2026-08-05 and began rolling out on August 4, 2026. If your screen is frozen as you read this, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds to force a restart, then install the update so it stops happening.
What the bug actually does
The Pixel Update Bulletin for August 2026 points to the official Pixel update notes for the list of functional fixes, and one of them reads: “Fix for an issue that can cause the touch panel to become unresponsive in certain conditions.” In plain terms, the digitizer, the layer under the glass that senses your finger, would intermittently stop registering taps and swipes. The display stays lit and the phone keeps running in the background; only touch input drops out, which is why the screen looks fine but ignores you.
Reports describe it as a sudden freeze or a burst of input lag that clears once the phone is restarted. It is intermittent, not constant, which is part of what made it hard to pin down. Google does not spell out the exact trigger, calling it only “certain conditions,” so treat any claim about one specific cause with caution. The same August update also fixes a crash in certain gaming apps and adds general GPU performance improvements, so a phone that was stuttering or crashing in games should behave better after the same install.
Who is affected
The touch-panel fix was listed specifically for the Pixel 10 family. Older supported models received the same August security patch level but were not named in this particular fix, so if you own an earlier Pixel and see a truly dead screen, it is more likely a separate hardware or software problem than this bug.

Install the fix
The permanent fix is the update itself. On the phone, open Settings > System > Software update > System update and tap Check for update, then let it download, install, and restart when prompted. The build that carries the fix is CP2A.260805.005 (a Rogers carrier variant ships as CP2A.260805.005.A1), and you can confirm what you are on under Settings > About phone > Build number. The rollout is phased over several days, so if nothing shows up at first, check again across the week rather than assuming your phone was skipped.
It is worth leaving automatic updates on so the next security patch installs without you having to remember. What to do while the screen is frozen
Until the update reaches your phone, a force restart is the reliable workaround, and it is the same step Google gives for any frozen Pixel: press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, until the phone restarts. Touch input comes back after the reboot. A few ordinary things also interfere with any touchscreen and are worth ruling out so you are not chasing the wrong problem.

None of these require erasing the phone. A factory reset is a last resort for a persistent software fault, not a first move for an intermittent freeze, and you should always back up first.
