Overnight charging, draining to zero, fast charging: most phone battery rules are myths. Here's how lithium-ion batteries really age and what actually helps.

Charging your phone overnight will not ruin its battery, and force-closing apps does nothing for its health. How a lithium-ion battery actually ages

A lithium-ion battery wears out through chemistry, not through some counter of “charges used up.” Every cell has a rated lifespan of roughly 500 to 1,000 full charge cycles — one cycle being 100% worth of energy, whether that’s a single full charge or four top-ups from 75% — before it noticeably loses capacity. In practice that’s a few years of normal use. What speeds up the decline is mostly heat, with a secondary penalty for long stretches sitting at a very high charge. A battery kept hot and full ages fastest; a battery kept cool and hovering in the middle ages slowest. Sitting at a very low charge is a real risk too, but mainly during long storage — a phone left dead in a drawer for months can over-discharge — not during the brief dips to 5% a normally used phone sees before its next charge. Overnight charging and the “keep it topped off” instinct

The overcharging fear made sense once, but not with a modern charge controller sitting between the wall and the cell. At 100% the phone simply stops. The mild, real downside is that a battery held at 100% and kept warm all night sits in its least favorite state for hours. The grain of truth: your phone doesn’t measure charge directly. It estimates the percentage with a fuel-gauge chip, and that estimate can drift over time. A single 0%-to-100% cycle can re-sync it when the number is visibly lying — jumping from 30% straight to a shutdown, say, or freezing at one figure for ages. Heat is the real enemy, and what to check when it isn’t the battery

If you take one habit from this, keep the phone cool. Skip the hot car dashboard, don’t game hard while it’s charging, and don’t charge it buried under a pillow where the heat has nowhere to go. Heat, more than the charger brand or the number on the wattage label, is what quietly steals capacity — and high wattage matters mostly because it produces more heat, so the two problems compound when a fast charge happens somewhere warm.

You can watch the decline yourself. On iPhone, Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging shows maximum capacity as a percentage; many Androids expose a similar figure or estimate it. A drift into the 80s after a couple of years is normal aging, not a defect.
